July 1, 2007

This is a couple of days late in coming since we did have a full weekend and visits from family. However, we are so thankful to God that we can even write that we had a full weekend. It was approriate that we were able to celebrate Marika's baptism and Julia's first time back to church on the same day. Both signify God's grace, His covenant promises, and the gift of life.

We have been so blessed to have wonderful support from our families and our church family here in Ottawa. Both our parents were here, along with one of Matt's sisters and her family, one of Matt's brothers, and one of Julia's sisters and her husband. One blessing through out this whole ordeal has kind of been the mingling of two of our worlds. It has been kind of neat to see our family get to know some of our friends more closely and vice versa.

As we start to reflect more on the last month, the beginning of Romans 5 becomes more in focus:

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

That path from suffering, to perseverance, to character and to hope is very true. However, we can jokingly say that we feel like we have enough character for the time being.

Julia continues to gain strength each day. Last night we even took a walked down to the park. In her first week home, she really had to force herself to eat, but foods are finally starting to taste good and her appetite is starting to improve. She is also continuing to lose a lot of the excess fluid she had gained. In the course of the last 3 weeks she has lost 25 lbs.

Marika is also doing well and is really starting to "talk" more and is starting to smile more often. It has been a real blessing to have Julia interact with her on a much more regular basis.

Thank you so much for your continued prayers for strength and healing.

What a blessing to have Marika baptised and have your family and church family gather together and to see Julia in church again.

What a beautiful sight - to see both of you giving Marika to be baptized...it brought me to tears - again! :-) What joy and thankfulness in the hearts of so many!
Continued strength in your healing, Jul, keep persevering...and I have to agree with your "assessment" that you guys have had enough character building for quite some time to come! :-) Enjoy your family time, and remember...patience...patience :-)
Love you!! Sonya & Randall

Yeah! I've been waiting eagerly to have another update and I was hoping to see pictures of Marika's baptism. Thanks! We keep praying for all of you. You should be getting another little pkg./envelope in the mail soon. I never know how long it's going to take to get there. Hopefully soon! We're leaving on Saturday for our adventure to MI. We love you!

Dear Matt, Julia and precious baby Marika,
What a day of praise and celebration! (Psalm 46 comes to mind) The video clip was beautiful..just wish everyone reading this could have been there because what was not captured was the pure joy on your faces that went so deep, expressing your thankfulness to God for His mercies and grace. None of us know what tomorrow will bring and your whole journey has reminded all of us to treasure each day, each family member and dear friend. Someone just said yesterday to me that someone reading your blog had said, "we don't get together with our friends often enough..let's do that more." I encourage others to quick jot a note to all of us out here who have been reading this blog, since it may be one of the last ones, to just share how God spoke to you during this time. I also realize there are many, daily 'journeys' of struggle and illness and pain that many families are enduring. I encourage all of us to be prayer warriors and encouragers, walking along beside them just as Jesus walks with us through our friends and families each day. Thankyou Barrhaven CRC in Ottawa for being the hands and feet of Jesus to our dear children. You were and are a blessing!!
Hugs and love to all,
Mom Kay, Dad CJ and Danny (safely home from Colombia carrying his own stories)

Matt & Julia & Marika,
In reading your account of the last month, "roller coaster" comes to mind! However, your faith and the comfort of God's Word was so clear as you shared your struggles and victories.
What a beautiful little girl Marika is! Our prayers for Julia's full return to strength and health.

Matt and Julia,

We've been praying and praying for you this whole time. This was a beautiful way to see how God answers those prayers with a reassurance of new life and eternal life. We're thrilled that Julia is getting better, and we hope that we'll be able to see you all soon. Love from Grand Rapids.

Matt/Julia/Marika - We are so sorry that we actually missed this blessed event. Know that you were in our thoughts and prayers during this journey. As a family we have been through many trials as well and know the importance of prayer to get through it. Hope all is well and we too can see you soon.
